Background:There is no pharmacological treatment for fluconazole (Diflucan). The aim of this study was to assess the safety and efficacy of diflucan in patients with recurrent flu-like syndrome (FLS).
Methods:A prospective, multicenter, open-label, randomized, placebo-controlled trial was performed in 18 centers across Australia and Canada. Patients with FLS (including non-pregnant, non-adolescent, and adolescent ≥18 years of age) who received fluconazole or diflucan were eligible for participation. Patients were randomized to treatment or control. Patients with suspected FLS or suspected pregnancy were excluded. All patients were asked to stop taking fluconazole and were also asked to continue taking diflucan. The primary outcome measure was the incidence of adverse events related to pregnancy (NAP) in the diflucan group. The secondary outcome measures were the time to abortion, the incidence of miscarriage, the incidence of pregnancy loss and pregnancy complications.
Results:Of the 18 centers, 12 (49.5%) received diflucan, and 10 (60.5%) received placebo. The incidence of NAP in the diflucan group was 3.8 per 100 person-years. The number of pregnancies with miscarriage or miscarriage in the diflucan group was 10.7 per 100 person-years (median 6.0).
